Four Steps is an Organisation that works with disabled persons.
Our students disabilities such as Autism, mental retardation, Down syndrome and and other learning disabilities.
In case of students with Autism they cannot communicate, make friends or accept any changes. Our special instructors help them develop social skills. We take them for outings and prepare them to adapt to the surroundings e.g in a restaurant you have to wait to order and sit at a table till the order comes. A lot of teaching is done through pictures and visual learning before they can go out to public place.
For persons with learning disabilities, we have to simplify their lessons and teach them how to respond when asked questions. A story which is completed in normal classrooms in two days can take a month to complete in these cases. This is a big learning challenge for autistic children as also for persons with learning disabilities.
Some of our students are diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). This is when these students are unable to concentrate on any one thing or sit still. Through techniques the teachers and occupational therapist calm them with pressure massage, supervised running / walking on the treadmill to burn that extra energy. Other table activities are also conducted so that they learn to focus , concentrate and sit for longer periods of time.
Students who are not accepted in regular schools get that special coaching from us. We nurture these children to be able to appear for the national open school examination. We have been successful so far in helping eight students complete the 10th class. With this 10th class pass certificate they are able to seek employment.
A student Ritish was trained and taught at Four Steps. He is now employed at a hotel in Delhi.
Cooking is another form of instruction that is an important skill for students. We have a weekly cooking class and through this they learn
Our student Bhavna who was on the borderline is now happily married and managing her household kitchen with pride.
Mira a student with and other learning disabilities now works at an Italian restaurant in south Delhi.
Art and craft is also a weekly activity . Things which appear easy can be very difficult for some of our students e.g. cutting in a straight line or colouring within the line. The art craft sessions help build their fine motor skills. With perseverance and patience our teachers have seen these skills improve in our students.
Our student Pradyum did such fine paper cutting that was used to make gift cards and other paper products. He regularly exhibits his products and helping him develop this skill has helped him earn money and keep meaningfully occupied.
Dance Therapy is another form of education. Most of our students love to dance and have participated in various competitions. Dance helps them to relax, they learn from other participants, and work hard to perform well. We have received several prizes at other institutions for their performance.
Our special educators at Four Steps are committed to helping our students in becoming self sufficient and independent with compassion and care.
